Gruyere: The gold standard

Gruyere: The gold standard

It has been a year since the $621m Gruyere gold mine was opened by the WA Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston. The Gruyere deposit in the Yamarna greenstone belt was the single largest gold discovery in WA in more than a decade. The Tier One operation was set to produce 300,000oz of gold annually and employ 250 people over its 12-year mine life. As the mine moves towards nameplate production in 2020, Gruyere is establishing itself as one of Australia’s largest and lowest-cost gold mining operations. Commercial production began on October 1, 2019, with Mr Johnston officially opening the mine on December 3, 2019. Within 12 months of operations, the site produced 230,590oz of gold at an operating cost...

Gruyere hits commercial production

Gruyere hits commercial production

AUSTRALIA’S biggest new gold mine, Gruyere, has hit commercial production ahead of schedule, with annual guidance for gold production predicted to be at the upper end on 75,000-100,000oz. The JV between WA company Gold Roads (ASX: GOR) and South African giant Gold Fields has been ramping up to be slightly ahead of the deadline since the ball mill was commissioned in early August. The $621m Gruyere mine, 200km north-east of Laverton, was Australia’s last major gold discovery since 2013, and took the JV just six years to reach commercial production. Commercial production was defined by the predetermined rate of 70pc throughput of nameplate capacity at a minimum average gold recovery rate of 85pc of expected mine metallurgical recovery. The company...

Gruyere Gold Project: Full of Life

All images: Gold Fields Australia. BY REUBEN ADAMS CONSTRUCTION work is ramping up at the $532 million Gruyere gold project, 200km east of Laverton in WA. For South African-based Gold Fields, which holds a 50 per cent stake in the project with Gold Road Resources, Gruyere represents the newest chapter in a long, influential – but relatively low profile – history in the WA gold sector. A January update has underscored the massive scope of this 270,000 ounce per annum (ozpa) project, which remains on budget and on track to pour first gold in early 2019. In the December quarter, the Gruyere JV awarded a key five-year, $400 million mining services contract to Downer EDI Mining, which will...

Road to production

Road to production

The Gruyere deposit is one of the most significant of its kind in the Yamarna Belt. All Images: Gold Road Resources. By Cameron Drummond COMPLETED in 2010, a study by the Geological Survey of WA suggested the Yamarna Belt shared geological similarities with the Kalgoorlie Terrane greenstone rocks, and studies by previous explorers such as Ausgold supported that claim. Gold Road Resources’s 5000 square kilometres of tenements in the Yamarna Belt already contain a number of discoveries dating back to 2009 when the company made its first find, Central Bore. Central Bore is contained within Gold Road’s North Yamarna tenements, with a JORC 2012 resource of 180,000 ounces (oz) of gold grading at...
