ACCORDING to the Queensland Resources Council (QRC), the resources sector added $74.3b to the State’s economy in 2018-2019 – and with new mining developments underway, the economy is set to grow even further in 2020 and beyond. QRC Chief Executive Ian Macfarlane said the sector already supports more than 316,000 jobs across the state, earns 80pc of Queensland’s exports and generates more than $5b in royalties for the State Government. “Queensland’s resources sector is now supporting one in every seven jobs, and one in every five dollars for Queensland’s economy,” Mr Macfarlane said. “That means from Burleigh Heads to Brisbane and from Mackay to Mount Isa, the resources sector is powering local economies and employing local people. “This year’s figures...

All Images: Fitzroy Australia Resources.     BY EMMA DAVIES   FITZROY Australia Resources has managed to turn around the troubled Carborough Downs mine and has received approval to develop its Ironbark No.1 project– just in time to meet forecast growth in demand for Australian metallurgical coal.   Since Fitzroy Australia Resources (Fitzroy) acquired the Carborough Downs mine in 2016, more than 2 million tonnes of coking coal has been produced and a 10-year mine life has been achieved by opening up northern reserves. The mine, formerly owned by Brazilian mining giant Vale, had encountered a number of issues since it began production– with various geological problems, rock faulting, and dangerous levels of carbon monoxide causing a force majeure in...

Now – as QLD Labor secures another term in office – it’s time to examine how red tape, drawn out development approvals, and political risk are having a real and tangible impact on greenfields and brownfields mine development.   Coal has officially re-emerged from some of the most difficult industry conditions in years. Even taking into account the substantial impacts of Cyclone Debbie in April, strong prices have put a spring into the step of the QLD’s major producers. In FY17, New Hope Group’s revenue from its QLD and NSW operations jumped 59 per cent to $844.1...

The Minerals Council of Australia commended the budget’s strong growth policy and its move to lower company tax rate to 25 per cent for all businesses by 2026. “ balances a careful approach to spending, the maintenance of a strict approach to tax integrity and lays out a medium term plan to promote investment and growth,” Minerals Council chief executive Brendan Pearson said. “The move to a lower company tax cut will, over time, improve the competitiveness of our tax system and promote investment and well-paid jobs, including...
