Liebherr Awarded Significant Engine Contract With BHP

Liebherr has signed an agreement with BHP to integrate Liebherr engines into the global miner’s existing R 9600 600-tonne excavator fleet at South Flank mine in Western Australia. Liebherr-Australia executive general manager customer service Tony Johnstone and BHP general manager South Flank Steve Campbell recently met in Perth to mark the signing of a deal to repower the South Flank R 9600 fleet with D9812 Liebherr engines and the strong ongoing partnership between the OEM and the miner. Repowering the R 9600 fleet enables reduced maintenance and standardised parts capability. The integration will mark an important step in the partnership, while helping the customer to reduce maintenance and standardise parts capability. The integration follows intensive factory and field validations on...

BHP and Caterpillar to develop zero-emissions trucks

The demand for low emissions technology has been driving trends and innovation in mining — recently in Australia, we’ve seen a spike in exploration for metals such as copper that can be used in sustainable technology such as electric cars and solar panels, alongside a slowing down of coal exploration. Today, it was announced that BHP (ASX: BHP) and Caterpillar have partnered to develop zero-emissions mining trucks, following months of collaboration with the goal of addressing BHP’s energy demands. BHP is promised early access to zero-emissions equipment developed by Caterpillar, and hands-on learning opportunities to ensure successful implementation at BHP sites. BHP and Caterpillar’s collaboration will help shape the processes, technology and infrastructure that will be required to support zero-emissions...

New Solar Farms at Nickel West

New Solar Farms at Nickel West

BHP and its power partner in the Goldfields, TransAlta, are to build two solar farms and a battery storage system to help power the Mt Keith and Leinster operations. This will help BHP reduce emissions from electricity use at Mt Keith and Leinster by 12%, based on FY2020 levels. The Northern Goldfields Solar Project will include a 27.4MW solar farm at Mt Keith and a 10.7 MWsolar farm and 10.1MW battery at Leinster, and will displace power currently supplied by diesel and gas turbine generation. This will result in an estimated reduction of 540,000t of CO2e over the first 10 years of operation. This is the equivalent of removing up to 23,000 combustion engine cars from the road every year....
